Vico del Gargano |
|
Vico del Gargano is one of the principle towns of the Gargano peninsula. At about 500 metres above sea level and only 5 km from the sea shore, it is a lively market town with some 8,000 inhabitants, its own dialect and a character all of its own.
Vico del Gargano - Centro Storico
The ancient village was built entirely on rock. Originally the locals carved out caves, then built houses on top. At its peak is the Chiesa Matrice (Mother Church) which is contained within the defensive walls of the 11th century castle of Federico II of Svevia. In later periods further defensive walls were constructed as the Centro Storico spread to cater for the population growth. Now the Centro Storico consists of three distinct zones: Civita,
Casale and Terra. |
