The natives of Vico (the Vichesi) are friendly, compassionate, clever and thrifty. They speak a dialect that is unique to the village. Their lives are busy in one way or another throughout the year. Either tending their olives, grapes or vegetable plots, mending nets, preparing wood for winter, visiting the daily market for fish and vegetables or carrying out a seasonal chore such as preparing huge quantities of homemade passata . They have a passion for their homes, their families, their food and wines, their customs and traditions and their co-residents. The streets are alive with the motion of the population; on foot, astride donkey, mule or motorino, cramped in the cab of a tre-ruote (three-wheeler pick-up style motorbikes), or just sitting on doorsteps doing their task for the day such as weaving a basket or plaiting their years supply of garlic. Workshops house craftsmen of all types: carpenters, blacksmiths, stonemasons and metal workers. There are bakers, butchers, delicatessens, tailors, jewellers, bar/cafes and even barbers who will still give you a shave with a cutthroat razor Every corner of Vico will throw up a surprise. |
